The San Andreas fault
Application

for the
Faults in the Field Expedition
to Southern California

May 6-12, 2008

Dr. Michele Cooke (left)
In May 2008 Dr. Michele Cooke, a geoscientist at the Univ. of Massachusetts, will lead a field expedition to southern California.  MSSD students can apply to go on the field trip using this application form.   Students and teachers from six other schools for the deaf will be iinvolved.   On this trip students will study active faults and earthquake zones, such as the San Andreas fault zone.   Students will learn about how geologic hazards impact on society. This 6-day trip will incorporate visits to active faults, landslides and costal erosion areas around city and urban communities.  The goal of the Faults in the Field Expedition is to apply skills and understanding learned in classroom activities to full scale geologic faults in the field.

Stops during the Expedition will include Cajon Pass, Lone Pine Canyon, San Jacinto Mountain, Palm Springs, Santa Monica, the Brea Tar Pits, and Long Beach.  The trip will involve moderately strenuous activity in the form of hiking and moving across rough terrain for fieldwork.  Overnight accommodations will be in either dorms or hotel rooms

Trip costs per person (estimation):

  • RT Airfare to Los Angeles: approximately $700
  • Lodging: $150  (approximately $25/day)
  • Food: $150  (approximately $25/day)
Scholarships:  Full and partial scholarships are available for students.  Completing this application makes you eligible for a scholarship. You will learn the amount of your scholarship if you are selected for the Expedition.

Expedition students will take a tram up San Jacinto Mountain to see a view of
the San Andreas fault and learn about evidence of faulting.
