MSSD science students paused their regular science lessons for a day to look at what a book from children's literature has to teach us about science concepts.  The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss, written in the 1970's tells the story of a ruined industrialist in a treeless wasteland and the tale of what happened to him.

Students watched the captioned version of the story or had a read-aloud, followed by activities to help tie in themes from the story with science concepts being studied in class.

Alternative Scenarios for The Lorax, by ESS students
The assignment was to modify The Lorax story to incorporate a strategy that could help prevent the
environmental destruction caused by the Once-ler's poor management.

RJ and Andy proposed getting rid of the waste and pollution.   A lockable building to store away the pollution,
or a rocket to send it off to the Moon.

Billy envisions a sunny grassy field where the last Truffula seed is planted.  20 years later a forest thrives.  This time a
"No Trespassing" sign protects the forest from the likes of the Once-ler.

Angela and Carl:  1st panel  "Lorax said "You're not allowed to cut down the trees".  Once-ler said "Prove it to me.""
2nd panel  "Lorax went to the forest to get some support."  3rd panel  "Lorax and supporters come to tell Once-ler that he cannot cut down the tress or there will be trouble."  4th panel  "Once-ler gave up and decided to find a different place to start his own business.  Lorax was thrilled!"

Olivia and Andrew thought the stone circle would be a good place to plant the seed.
Later a large Truffula forest grows, and the Lorax appears "I'm BACK!"
