Science teachers are invited to apply for this special workshop to be held on the campus of Gallaudet University, Monday - Saturday, August 2-7, 2004.   Workshop materials will be targeted for teachers of high school students.
Deadline for applications is postmarked by April 9, 2004.  Teachers selected will be informed by the first of May.
The workshop is designed for science teachers who
  •  are interested in participating in the Clerc Center's SOAR-High Earth System Science Project for the 2004/2005 school year.  (More about that here...)
  • or  who teach, or plan to teach Earth Science, physical science, or related areas
  • or just want to revitalize their science content and activity ideas!
Note: participation in the SOAR-High ESS Project during the 2004/2005 SY is not required for selection into this workshop.  However, qualified teachers who are interested in becoming part of the SOAR-High Project  will receive priority.
SOAR-High students from two schools
videoconference about a lab that
both classes performed in science class.
Students learn to us a Sun Photometer
to measure how much water vapor there
is in the atmosphere.
In this workshop teachers will learn strategies used in the SOAR-High Project (using an online curriculum, using data in the classroom, classroom to classroom collaborations), including involving students in
  • Atmosphere studies such as visual cloud observations and Sun Photometer data collection. (NASA CALIPSO mission)
  • Hydrosphere activities to involve students in ocean current tracking
  • analyzing earthquakes and 3 dimensional fault systems in Geosphere studies.
Fees for the 6 day workshop are fully supported by a grant from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation.  Teachers who are selected to participate will receive dormatory rooms and board on the campus of  Gallaudet University,  six days of instruction and activities, and a $100 stipend.
