May 1,1996

student using soil auger
Conor uses the soil auger to make a
10-cm deep hole for the first gypsum block sensor.
students pouring mud from bucket The mud slurry is poured into the 30-cm hole
before inserting a sensor.
students poking mud from auger We seem to have very heavy clay soil - Conor, Al,
and Tommy invent a unique method for clearing the
auger bucket by poking a pole in from the lower end.

Our four sensors are now in place and covered by
these soup cans.
