MSSD Ozone Garden
Setting up the garden

First week of school, 2005
[ Return to the Ozone Garden page ]

Planters for the garden were found on a 2nd floor patio on the other side of the building. Thank you to the Math Department who agreed to let us have them!   The first thing we had to do was to move them, which turned out to be a pretty big job.

Students emptied the dirt into a wheelbarrow and took it to the Science Patio.  Then we discovered the planters were attached to the floor,  so we sent a request to Gallaudet Grounds Department, and they figured out how to break the planters loose.

We have to do WHAT?

Students put the planters on a cart and hauled them to the science patio on the first floor.   Then they replaced the soil,  and added half a bag of soil conditioner.

Dr. Ladd said the bean pots must be wrapped in insulation to keep the soil warm longer into the fall season.   Students cut the insulation to the right size and used duct tape to hold it around the bean pots.

Other creative uses for the shiny insulation were also discovered.

A hat!

A tanning shield!

Students cleaned up the area and then carried many buckets of water to soak the soil in all of the containers.
